Edison School of Innovation Receives Project Lead the Way Grant to Enhance STEM Curriculum

At Edison School of Innovation (Edison), our commitment to developing skilled and courageous problem solvers has been recognized nationally. We are thrilled to announce that our tuition-free K-8 public charter school has been awarded a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway grant, enabling us to enrich our STEM-focused curriculum for 6th-grade students further. This grant comes alongside another significant achievement—Edison has been recognized as a 2023-24 PLTW Distinguished School, an honor awarded to several elementary schools across the U.S. for providing access to transformative learning experiences.

Empowering Young Engineers with PLTW Gateway

The PLTW Gateway program is designed to ignite students' passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Thanks to this grant, Edison will implement a new STEM-focused science curriculum for our 6th-grade students. This curriculum is not just about learning theories; it's about hands-on, project-based experiences that allow students to apply what they learn in real-world scenarios. By engaging in these activities, students will develop critical thinking skills and the confidence to tackle complex problems, laying a solid foundation for future STEM education.

A Distinguished School for a Bright Future

Our recent recognition as a 2023-24 Project Lead The Way Distinguished School is a testament to the exceptional educational experiences we offer. This honor is given to schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To qualify for this recognition, Edison had to ensure that more than 75 percent of our students participated in the program and that at least one PLTW Launch module was offered at each grade level during the 2022-23 school year.

PLTW Launch, our elementary STEM curriculum, plays a crucial role in shaping these perceptions. Whether designing a car safety belt or creating digital animations based on their stories, our students engage in critical and creative thinking through project-based learning, build teamwork skills, and develop a passion for STEM subjects.

“We are honored to recognize Edison School of Innovation for their commitment to providing students with exceptional educational experiences while ensuring equitable access to PLTW programs,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. "We congratulate them on this achievement and celebrate their dedication to empowering students with the knowledge and skills to succeed, not only in STEM subjects but also preparing them for future careers and life beyond the classroom."

Innovative Learning from Kindergarten to 5th Grade

Edison's K-5 curriculum is organized around themes and topics rather than isolated skills. We integrate Project Lead The Way (PLTW) into our science curriculum, engaging students in hands-on activities, projects, and problems that reflect real-world scenarios. This innovative approach introduces students to computer science, engineering, and biomedical science principles early on, allowing them to develop essential problem-solving skills.

In contrast to traditional elementary classrooms, where learning is often segmented into math and reading blocks with instruction focused on a “skill of the week,” Edison does things differently. Our curriculum allows students to explore their interests deeply and challenges them at their ability level. By solving real-world problems collaboratively, our students hone their critical and creative thinking skills, preparing them for academic and life success.
